How do I reference a book in MLA?

I’m writing a paper and need to reference a book using MLA style. Could someone please provide a clear example and explain the format? Also, how does the format differ for online books or edited volumes?

  • Author’s last name, first name
  • Title of Book (italicized)
  • Publisher
  • Year of publication
  • Use hanging indent format
  • Double-space the citation
  • Example: Smith, John. The Art of Writing. Penguin, 2020.

In MLA, cite a book as: Author’s Last Name, First Name. Title of the Book. Publisher, Year. Example: Smith, John. The Art of Learning. Penguin Books, 2021. Italicize titles and use correct punctuation throughout.

In MLA (9th edition), cite a book using this format:

Author’s Last Name, First Name. Title of the Book. Publisher, Year.

Example:
Smith, John L. The Art of Learning. Penguin Books, 2020.

Italicize the title, use title case capitalization, and include all core elements in the given order.
