I’m currently researching the history of education policy in the U.S. and was wondering if anyone knows when the Department of Education was officially established.

The U.S. Department of Education was officially created on October 17, 1979, and began operating in May 1980.
It was established to enhance federal support for education and to separate educational responsibilities from those of other government departments.

The Department of Education was created on October 17, 1979, when President Jimmy Carter signed legislation establishing it as a Cabinet-level department. Its purpose is to oversee federal education programs, administer student aid, and promote educational excellence and equity across the United States.
