When was the Department of Education created?

I’m currently researching the history of education policy in the U.S. and was wondering if anyone knows when the Department of Education was officially established.

The U.S. Department of Education was officially created on October 17, 1979, and began operating in May 1980.
It was established to enhance federal support for education and to separate educational responsibilities from those of other government departments.
