What’s the difference between an IEP and a 504 plan?

I’m trying to understand special education supports better. Can someone explain how IEPs and 504 plans differ and when each is used?

An IEP (Individualized Education Program) provides specialized instruction and services for students with disabilities under IDEA, requiring measurable goals and annual reviews. A 504 plan (under Section 504) offers accommodations (e.g., extended time) but no specialized instruction. IEPs are more comprehensive, while 504s ensure equal access to education.
