I’ve been hearing a lot about PBIS in education settings, but I’m not entirely sure what it means or how it’s used. Can someone explain what PBIS stands for and how it works in schools?

PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) is a proactive approach schools use to improve student behavior and create positive environments. It sets clear expectations, teaches appropriate behaviors, and reinforces them with rewards. Schools use data to monitor progress and support students at different levels—universal, targeted, and individualized interventions.

PBIS works by teaching, modeling, and reinforcing positive behaviors rather than focusing solely on punishment.

PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support) refers to a system that enhances positive behavior within schools. This is done through setting standards of acceptable conduct, teaching proper behavior, and enforcing it through reinforcement. Data-driven strategies are used to pinpoint problems and reward desirable behavior while providing interventions for unacceptable conduct.
