What happens during the G1 and G2 phases of the cell cycle?

I'm studying the cell cycle and want to understand the roles of the G1 and G2 phases. Can someone explain what the cell does in each of these stages?

During the G₁ phase, the cell grows, produces proteins, and synthesizes organelles needed for normal functions while preparing for DNA replication. During the G₂ phase, the cell continues to grow, produces proteins required for mitosis, and checks for DNA errors to ensure readiness for cell division.

During the G1 phase (Gap 1), the cell grows in size, synthesizes proteins, and produces RNA to prepare for DNA replication. It also performs its normal metabolic functions.


In the G2 phase (Gap 2), the cell continues to grow and produce proteins needed for cell division. It checks for DNA damage and ensures DNA replication is complete before entering mitosis.
