How do predators impact ecosystems?

Predators not only directly but also indirectly affect the ecosystems by regulating the number of prey and thus keeping the ecosystem in a stable state and avoiding overgrazing. The control mechanism of this kind, called a trophic cascade, has a top-down effect on the food chain, controlling the numbers and diversity of the species below it as well as influencing such factors as plant growth, disease dispersal, and biodiversity.

Predators play a critical role in maintaining ecosystem balance. They control the population of prey species, preventing overgrazing or overpopulation. This helps maintain plant diversity and the health of habitats. Predators also influence the behavior of prey, which affects where animals feed and live.

Without predators, ecosystems can become imbalanced, leading to food shortages, species decline, and habitat degradation.
