How are apostrophes used to show possession?

Apostrophes demonstrate a sense of ownership as they signify that something belongs to a person or something. When the word is singular, one adds apostrophe + s (e.g. the dogs toy). When the words are plural, try to use only an apostrophe when they have an ending s (e.g., the owner of the dogs). The non-regular inflections of plural also use apostrophe + s.

Apostrophes indicate ownership - add ’s to singular nouns (the toy of the cat) and simply add 1 apostrophe to plural nouns ending in s (the leashes of the dogs).
