I’m learning about cell organelles and came across the endoplasmic reticulum. Can someone explain its role and the difference between rough and smooth ER?
The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a network of membranes that helps in the synthesis, folding, modification, and transport of proteins and lipids. The rough ER, with ribosomes, produces proteins, while the smooth ER synthesizes lipids, metabolizes carbohydrates, and detoxifies drugs and poisons within the cell.
