What Is a Mixed Number?

A mixed number combines a whole number and a proper fraction, representing values between whole numbers. For example, 2 ½ means 2 wholes plus one-half. Mixed numbers are often used in measurements and everyday math to express amounts more clearly than improper fractions.

A mixed number is a whole-number with a fraction, such as 2½. It is not the same as an improper fraction as the fractional part is less than 1 whereas an improper fraction is greater than or equal to 1.
