I’ve heard teachers mention number bonds in early math lessons. Can someone explain what number bonds are and give a simple example?

Number bonds in math show how numbers can be split or combined. For example, 5 can be broken into 2 and 3. They help children understand addition and subtraction by visualizing part-whole relationships. Used in early math education, number bonds build strong mental math skills and form the foundation for more advanced arithmetic concepts later on.
