We all face this at some point. How do you address underperformance while keeping the team’s morale high?

When a team member isn’t performing well, start by identifying the root cause—whether it’s lack of clarity, training, or motivation. Communicate openly and provide constructive feedback with specific examples. Offer support, resources, or mentoring to help them improve. Set clear goals and timelines for progress. If performance doesn’t improve despite efforts, consider reassigning tasks or involving management to ensure overall team success.

When one of your team members is not performing, find a root cause to it and this could be lack of clarity or training or motivation. Be open, constructive and give feedback with concrete examples. Provide encouragement, materials or guidance to guide them to be better. Establish specific objectives and deadlines. In the event that results are not getting better, even with the effort, then look into redesigning tasks or bringing in the management to make sure that the entire team is successful.
