How long does it take to form a habit?

I’ve heard different opinions about how long it takes to form a habit. Some say 21 days, others say it depends on the person. What’s the real timeline based on science?

The process of developing new habits takes different lengths of time for each person. University College London researchers discovered that people need sixty-six days to create new habits although the process duration varies between 21 days and 254 days based on their ability to maintain consistency and the level of habit difficulty and their personal drive. Regular repetition matters most.

Research shows that forming a habit takes an average of 66 days, but the exact time varies widely depending on the behavior, environment, and consistency. Simple habits form faster, while complex lifestyle changes may take longer—anywhere from 21 to 254 days. The key factors are repetition, motivation, and creating a supportive routine.

Forming a habit usually takes around 30–60 days for most people, but it can be shorter or longer depending on how consistent you are and how difficult the habit is; the key is doing it daily until it becomes automatic.

Forming a habit varies, but on average it takes about 2 to 3 months (roughly 60–90 days) of consistent repetition before a new behavior feels automatic. Some habits take less time and others more, depending on the person and the complexity of the habit.

That “21 days to form a habit” thing is more of a myth. The actual science says it usually takes around 60 to 70 days for a habit to feel automatic.
It really depends on the habit though simple ones take less time, complex ones take longer.

Studies basically say that it takes about 66 days on average to develop a habit, but it can vary a lot from person to person and also depending on the behaviour, the environment and the consistency used. Fast habits form but difficult ones take longer - around 21 to 254 days. The main points are repeating the action, being motivated and having a routine that supports the change.
