How do you annotate a book effectively?

I'm trying to get better at annotating books for school and personal reading. Do you have any systems for marking important passages or making notes? How do you balance annotating with staying immersed in the story?

To annotate a book effectively:
  1. Preview first – Skim chapters to understand key themes and structure.
  2. Use a system – Develop symbols or color codes for themes, questions, and key ideas.
  3. Highlight selectively – Mark only essential phrases or evidence, not entire paragraphs.
  4. Write in the margins – Summarize, ask questions, or connect ideas to other texts.
  5. Use sticky notes – For longer reflections or when you can’t write in the book.
  6. Review annotations – After reading, revisit your notes to identify patterns and insights.

Annotating a book effectively means engaging actively with the text to improve understanding and retention. Here are some strategies:
  1. Highlight selectively – Emphasize key ideas, quotes, or arguments, not entire paragraphs.
  2. Write margin notes – Summarize main points, ask questions, or note reactions.
  3. Use symbols – Create a system (e.g., ⭐ for important, ? for confusing, ! for surprising).
  4. Underline key terms – Especially useful for themes, motifs, or vocabulary.
  5. Connect ideas – Draw arrows or write cross-references between related sections.
  6. Summarize at chapter ends – Write a brief recap or takeaway.
  7. Color-code – Assign colors to themes or concepts for quick visual organization.
