I’ve been teaching for years and want to move into instructional design. What skills should I develop, and how do I get started in this field?

Leverage your teaching skills in curriculum design, assessment, and learner engagement. Gain expertise in e-learning tools like Articulate or Captivate, and learn instructional design models such as ADDIE. Build a portfolio showcasing sample courses, network with designers, and highlight how your educational experience supports creating effective, learner-centered digital content.

The change in teaching to instructional design entails learning design principles, authoring tools, and adult learning as well. Develop a portfolio, gain applicable qualifications, and rebrand teaching experience as design skills. The shift is made with the help of networking, freelancing, and seeking entry-level roles in instructional design.

Honestly, you’re already halfway there. Just pick up some instructional design tools, learn how to design courses for adults, and build a small portfolio. Start networking and applying slowly, your teaching experience translates more than you think.

To move from teaching to instructional design, leverage your curriculum and lesson planning skills, learn ID tools and models (like ADDIE), build a portfolio of e-learning content, and highlight learning outcomes on your resume.
