Apostrophes demonstrate a sense of ownership as they signify that something belongs to a person or something. When the word is singular, one adds apostrophe + s (e.g. the dogs toy). When the words are plural, try to use only an apostrophe when they have an ending s (e.g., the owner of the dogs). The non-regular inflections of plural also use apostrophe + s.
