I want my team to feel comfortable speaking up, admitting mistakes and innovating. What concrete things do you as a leader do to make that happen?

Encourage open dialogue, listen without judgment, and acknowledge contributions. Admit mistakes to model vulnerability. Set clear expectations while respecting individuality. Give constructive feedback privately and praise publicly. Ensure every voice is heard, discourage blame, and support learning from failure to build trust and safety.

The biggest thing is just openly admitting your own mistakes and asking for input without getting defensive. When leaders show they are human, the whole team feels safe enough to take risks

Embedding psychological safety requires intentional leadership. Core behaviors include modelling vulnerability (admitting mistakes), practicing active listening (asking clarifying questions rather than interrupting), and separating failure from punishment to encourage innovation.

Leaders build psychological safety by listening without judgment, admitting mistakes, inviting opinions, encouraging questions, giving respectful feedback, rewarding honesty, protecting team members, and acting consistently.
