I’m trying to understand the concept of kinship in sociology or anthropology. Can someone explain what kinship means and why it’s important?

Kinship refers to the social bonds and relationships between individuals based on blood, marriage, or adoption. It defines family structures, inheritance, responsibilities, and social roles in societies. Anthropologists study kinship systems to understand cultural norms, lineage, and community organization, as it plays a crucial role in shaping social identity and interpersonal connections within a group or society.

Kinship is defined as the social ties of relationships of the individuals, either by blood, marriage or adoption. It establishes the familial relationships among parents, siblings, cousins and the extended family. Social roles, duties, and culture of communities and families are other issues that kinship determines how individuals relate and assist each other.
