How do you become a Substitute Teacher?

I’m thinking about working as a substitute teacher. Can someone share the requirements or process to get started?

  • Obtain a high school diploma or bachelor’s degree (varies by state)
  • Pass a criminal background check and fingerprinting
  • Apply for a substitute teaching permit or license (if required)
  • Submit an application, resume, and transcripts to school districts
  • Complete orientation or training (if needed)
  • Get added to the district’s substitute teacher list

The easiest way to become a substitute teacher is to have a bachelor’s degree (in any subject), then apply through your local school district. Many areas offer quick online applications and may provide a short training or orientation. Some states don’t even require a full teaching license — just a background check and basic credentials.
