How did Old Yeller die in the book Old Yeller?

I just finished reading part of the story and got really attached to Old Yeller. Can someone explain how he dies in the book and why it happens?

In the book Old Yeller, the dog dies after being bitten by a rabid wolf while protecting the family. Because Old Yeller becomes infected with rabies, Travis is forced to shoot him to prevent the disease from spreading, making it a heartbreaking moment.
